A devastating flood in the Himalayas has left more than 1,300 people missing and at least 273 dead in Nepal and China, turning a remote mountain disaster into one of the region’s most serious humanitarian crises in recent years.

The catastrophe struck after a suspected glacial collapse in the Himalayas unleashed a powerful wall of water, mud and debris through valleys and settlements along the Nepal-China border. What began high in the mountains quickly became a disaster far downstream, sweeping away homes, roads, bridges and entire communities.

For thousands of families, however, the disaster is not measured only in destroyed buildings or damaged infrastructure. It is measured in the silence left behind by missing relatives.
